I recently spoke with an executive who proudly shared how well he gets along with his team. He hired each member personally, and they have strong mutual loyalty—they don’t want another boss, and he doesn’t want anyone else working for him. It sounds like a happy story, right? The team is cohesive, motivated, and highly productive within their own sphere.

However, there are potential pitfalls to this seemingly perfect scenario. This close-knit dynamic can become an “us vs. them” mentality when interacting with other departments. Such insular thinking can create silos, hindering collaboration and communication across the organization. When teams become too focused on their own cohesion, it can lead to a lack of alignment with broader company goals and priorities.

For instance, if this team is so tight-knit that it resists input or collaboration from other teams, it can lead to conflicts and inefficiencies. Important initiatives that require cross-departmental cooperation may suffer, and the company’s overall productivity can be negatively impacted.
